Sea Gull Lighting Joins This Old House® to Help Renovate a Two-Family East Boston HomeInternational Builder Show (IBS) (February 7, 2007) – Sea Gull Lighting Products, LLC (SeaGullLighting.com) recently joined the Emmy Award-winning This Old House to help renovate a nearly 100-year-old, two-family home in East Boston, Mass. as part of the show’s latest TV project airing on PBS. The original home improvement series, which regularly features top-to-bottom renovations on historic homes, this time chose the revamp of a two-family owned by two generations of women in the same family. Built in 1916, the home had fallen into disrepair and required the remodel of two separate living spaces including two bathrooms, two kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and a home office. The trick was redoing each living space in entirely different styles to accommodate the personal tastes of both homeowners. “The two women who own this home had widely varying ideas for what they wanted accomplished,” said Lisey Good, owner and founder of Boston’s Good Interiors and the designer of much of the home’s remodel. “First-floor owner Liz Bagley wanted an urban, lofty feel to her space, while Chris Flynn wanted to take advantage of the nearby view of the water with a ‘cottage by the sea’ theme in her second-floor unit.” To fulfill the requirements of both homeowners, an assortment of track, rail and recessed lighting, ceiling fans, chandeliers, outdoor lanterns, pendants, ceiling lights and hall/foyers fixtures were chosen from several popular Sea Gull Lighting collections including Pemberton, Sussex, Stockholm, Pemberton, Windsor Manor, Metropolis and the company’s Ambiance® Lighting Systems. “Choosing the improper lighting is a common mistake that can greatly detract from the overall effect of even the most beautifully designed projects,” says Good. “The lighting chosen for the This Old House East Boston project was essential for furthering the ambiance, while ensuring functionality to each area of the home,” adds Kathy Marshall, owner of K Marshall Design Inc. in Wenham, Ma. and the kitchen designer, who redesigned all the kitchens and baths for the East Boston This Old House project. Rounding out the experience in each kitchen and bath was also the choice of close to ceiling lighting, pendants and recessed lighting to easily achieve layered lighting effects, as well as the use of Xenon under-cabinet lighting from Ambiance® Lighting Systems, another extremely popular brand from Sea Gull Lighting. “It was important to create drama, but also necessary to make sure these work places facilitated the easy accomplishment of tasks,” further explained Marshall. “The under cabinet lighting and other fixtures allowed us to highlight certain areas while generating separate veils of light to accommodate the mood of any affair or occasion." Eighteen episodes featuring the This Old House East Boston transformation are currently airing on PBS. The This Old House episode (#2618) Seagull Lighting is featured in premieres on PBS beginning Thursday, February 1, 2007.
